What to see at Rudyard Lake & Steam Railway

The lake is 2.5 miles in length and is the longest straight stretch of water outside the lake district. The railway starts from Rudyard Station where there is a free car park. Its on Rudyard road, the B5331 one kilometre west from the junction of the A523 Leek to Macclesfield Trunk Road. watch out for the brown signs on the A523 which are about one kilometre North of Leek. The post code if you have a SaT Nav is ST13 8PF. This will take you onto Rudyard Road. The entrance to the station is right next to the old railway bridge. Take the ramp up into the car park

Look Out for:

Birds of every description but the Herons fishing or Buzzards hunting!

Boats- rowing boats for hire and the trip boat Honey, racing rowing boats and sculls

Sailing dingies at the Rudyard Lake Sailing club especially if the wind is strong!!

Sailability is a nationally recognised disabled sailing charity with special adapted sailing boats

The red and yellow Dragon boats often race

Ducks abound everywhere and are always hungry

Swans -the lake has a breeding pair who raised 5 cygnets in 2009.They chase all other swans off the lake

Fishermen - the lake is a popular fishery with frequent matches

Battleships- the Rudyard Navy is often in action at weekends in summer

The Earl of Macclesfield Boathouse has been restored at the east side of the lake near the Dam Station

The lake activity centre is available for functions and has a cafe and toilets

The lakefront houses- see if you can spot the Lady of the Lake!

The Steam Trains!!

In December Father Christmas travels down the lake to his grotto to meet the Santa steam trains

FACILITIES

The railway is the best way to see the lake especially if you have mobility problems. check out our webpage opposite. We offer learn to drive a steam engine courses and these are highly regarded by everyone who has undertaken one

There are catering facilities at Rudyard Station at weekends from mid March to the end of October and on selected dates midweek in summer at Platform 2 cafe

It has a large covered picnic area available at Rudyard Station without any extra charge for booked parties.

Watch out for the Rudyard Navy on patrol !

The Rudyard Lake Steam Railway is in the North Staffordshire Peak District and the steam trains give a great 3 mile return trip along the side of the lake. The railway uses coal fired narrow gauge steam engines to pull its trains. The railways 5 steam engines all have names linked to the tales of King Arthur.
